Description

This is made of cedar wood and was almost surely a handsome souvenir from the Holy Land, probably in the 1920s when it was under the British Mandate, but quite possibly a little earlier when still under Ottoman sovereignty. Cedar wood album covers were a far more prevalent keepsake for visitors to Jerusalem. In this inkwell, Hebrew letters are etched on the top pyrographically, and so is the bird also drawn in. The five Roman numerals on the front may refer to the five books of the Pentateuch, or they may just be pretty decoration of volume numbers to suggest a matching set. This front, the faux set, slides to unlatch the top in order to open to the inkwell. Below the top lid is a plush plaid velvet. The novelty also has a touch of arts and craft detailing on the top faux volume resting on the front door.
